Mountaineering
Seasons : The mountaineering season tends to be concentrated during April - November. A number of climbs are also being attempted in winter.
Grade : Mountaineering routes are graded according to the degree of difficulty and accessibility. Prior medical examination is essential. The permanent snow line generally being is the region of 5250 mts.
Advanced : For peaks between 7350 mts. To 8050 mts. In height the base camp would usually be established between 4200 mts. To 5250 mts. However as the route goes higher location of camp sites is determined by the slope, possibility of digging snow caves and the need to avoid exposure to wind and avalanche.
The highest peak in Uttaranchal Nanda Devi being 7601 mts. artificial oxygen for climbing is not necessary in Kumaon-Garhwal. In view of the height and distance of the Kumaon and Garhwal Himalayas, many available peaks can be attempted within a period of four to five weeks from Delhi .
Trekking:
For those fascinated by the unexplored, the hills of Uttaranchal offer breathtakingly adventurous trekking routes. Trekking is the best way of getting to know any land its people its culture and traditions. Trekking often confused with mountaineering does not require as much preparation as mountaineering is more technical in nature and hazardous but this is not so in the case of trekking. From time immemorial hill folk and pilgrims trekked over hills and dales due to lack of roads and means of transportation. Adi shankaracharya trekked in the Garhwal Himalayas in the 8 th century A.D. he was the pioneer who opened trekking routes in this part of the country.
Famous Treks of Uttaranchal:
Dodi Tal Trek: Dodi Tal is situated at an elevation of 3024 mts. North of Uttarkashi and is surrounded by dense woods of oak, pine, deodar and rhododendrons.
Valley of flowers trek: Surrounded by the river pushpavati and small streams at an elevation ranging between 3000 to 4000 meteres the valley is nearly 10 kms. in length and 2 kms. in width.
Har-Ki-Doon Trek: At an elevation of 3566 mts. is surrounded by glittering peaks and dense forests. The forests are rich in wild life and is a veritable paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers.
Kuari Pass Trek: The pass (Khal) is approached through a narrow goat track at an elevation of 4265 mts. In the heart of chamoli district. The glorious view of the imposing eastern peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas is unforgettably enchanting.
